It was a quarry
before it was a campsite.
A patch of the farm that couldn't be farmed, opened up so people could enjoy this part of the valley quietly. Near Harburg in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
How it started
Ground the farm couldn't use, turned into somewhere to camp.
This corner of the farm was a quarry. It was never going to be good for much else, and it sits in one of the better spots on the property — so rather than leave it standing idle, we turned it into a campsite. The idea was a quiet one: somewhere people could take in this part of the valley without much going on around them.
The campsite is run by the same family that owns and runs the farm — Ron and Anke Kusel, along with Frank and Petra. Anke looks after enquiries, so when you email about a booking, she's the one who reads it and replies. There's no call centre and no reception desk.
Replies come around a normal working day, usually within 24 hours. So if you haven't heard back by lunchtime, nothing has gone wrong — the inbox just hasn't been reached yet. Once your stay is confirmed and paid by EFT, you get the gate code and arrival details, and you let yourself in.
The campsite is open ground, not numbered stands. You pick an available spot when you arrive. We cap how many bookings we take for any weekend, so you shouldn't ever pull in and find nowhere to put a tent.
The waterfall
How good it looks depends on the rain.
After a wet week the falls are loud and full. In a dry winter they're closer to a trickle. Two footpaths lead there from camp — the old gravel road is the easy one, the steeper path is better looking but sometimes overgrown. Both are a proper walk, and you do them at your own risk.

Keeping it quiet takes a few rules.
A quiet campsite is the whole point of the place, so these are the things we hold to.
Bring your own setup
Your own tent, caravan or rooftop tent. There's no shop, no firewood and nothing to rent, so come stocked. Gas showers and electricity are on us; the rest is on you.
Dogs are welcome
Genuinely — provided they're well trained, stay under control and aren't barkers. The grounds are fully fenced.
A farm, not a resort
It's a working farm, so expect farm noises, farm smells and weather that does what it likes. The ground is open and the paths are rough in places.
